“Events like these are great opportunities to help spread awareness and raise the funds we need to continue our mission: to lead the fight to treat and cure ALS through global research and advocacy while providing people living with ALS here in Florida the compassionate care and support they so desperately need,” says Kim Hanna, President and CEO of The ALS Association Florida Chapter. “It was a fantastic day to honor and support all who have and continue to bravely fight Lou Gehrig’s Disease.”

According to The ALS Association Florida Chapter, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that slowly robs a person of the ability to walk, speak, swallow and, eventually breathe. With no known cause or cure, a person can expect to live typically 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. ALS has no racial, ethnic or socioeconomic boundaries and in only 10% of cases there is a family history of ALS. Today, there are approximately 30,000 people in the US living with ALS and 5,600 people are diagnosed each and every year in the US.

“Philanthropic giving is an absolute must. My dad was diagnosed with ALS in 2010 and passed away in 2012. His favorite phrase was ‘attitude determines altitude’. When he was diagnosed, he carried the mindset of a warrior and vowed to beat the disease. I’m determined to carry that torch and help others with support during their journey,” says Steve Shanton, president of Venture Construction Group of Florida.

A major supporter of ALS research, Venture Construction Group of Florida sponsors numerous charitable events throughout the country, including the ALS Therapy Development Institutes A White Coat Affair on November 14, 2015 in Boston, Massachusetts; the Ride to Defeat ALS in Tampa, Florida on November 7, 2015; the Walk to Defeat ALS in Miami-Dade county on September 26, 2015; the ALS Classic Golf Tournament on September 9, 2015 in Greater Chicago, Illinois; the ALS Express-Ride to Defeat ALS in New Jersey on May 30, 2015; the Fiesta 5K Run for ALS Research in Baltimore, Maryland on May 2, 2015; the Walk to Defeat ALS in West Palm Beach, Florida on March 21, 2015.
