Leading Florida Construction Company Supports Community Efforts to End Domestic Violence

BOCA RATON, Fla. Venture Construction Group of Florida (VCGFL) sponsors the Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA) 11th Annual Heart of a Woman Luncheon. The event was held on Feb. 28 from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club in Boca Raton. AVDA’s annual luncheon celebrates the strength, courage, and determination of women. AVDA’s mission is to promote violence-free relationships and social change by offering alternative choices to end violence and domestic abuse.

“We are honored to support the amazing work that AVDA does throughout the year and we are committed to helping raise awareness to end domestic violence,” says Stephen Shanton, president and CEO of Venture Construction Group of Florida.

AVDA provides confidential services to victims of domestic abuse and individuals at risk of abuse. AVDA is home to a state-certified domestic violence center that provides emergency and transitional housing. AVDA also provides a 24 hour crisis hotline, advocacy, counseling and support to help victims live violence-free and self-sufficient lives. AVDA works throughout the community to educate and engage people of all ages in the commitment to prevent violence.

Event honorees include the Boca Raton Police Department, Boynton Beach Police Department, Delray Beach Police Department, and Highland Beach Police Department for their outstanding commitment to ending domestic violence by holding perpetrators accountable. Keynote speaker Melissa Dohme-Hill, coined the “Sur-Thriver”, shared her story of survival after her high school ex-boyfriend brutally attacked her by stabbing her 32 times. Following her recovery, Melissa became an advocate and speaks out against domestic violence.

In 2016, 105,668 crimes of domestic violence were reported toFlorida law enforcement, according to the Florida Coalition of Domestic Violence (FCADV). The coalition warns that many more survivors of domestic violence are not reporting their abusers to the police or accessing services at domestic violence services due to reasons such as shame, fear, or being prevented from doing so by their abusers.

A major advocate for philanthropy and giving back to the community, VCGFL sponsors numerous events throughout the year to raise funds and domestic violence awareness including the Kendra Scott Gives Back Party benefitting AVDA and the Gemma’s Angels Foundation, annual Venture Construction Group of Florida Toy Drive benefitting AVDA in Stuart, Boca Raton and Palm Beach Gardens, and the annual AVDA Race for Hope in Marco Island.

AVDA is proudly accredited for Excellence in Nonprofit Management and was one of the first agencies in Palm Beach County to receive accreditation from Nonprofits First. Accreditation recognizes AVDA’s excellent business practices in the areas of governance, administration, board governance, human resources and financial management.
